INTRODUCTION
|
All
objects that man creates are either shapes or forms, and the creation involves
various elements and principles of design. A shape, be it geometrical or
free-form, is a 2D area that is defined in some
way by line, space, value, colour or a combination of these.
Counterpart to shape, form is a 3D object that has dimension or volume. Shapes
like triangles or squares can develop into forms such as cones and cubes with
the addition of depth. On the other hand, space is the
element that refers to the emptiness within or around the objects, and it can
be either positive or negative. In this sense, the shapes and
forms are called the positive space, or the ‘figure’, while the empty spaces
around shapes and forms are called negative spaces, or the ‘ground’. In built
environment, the objects created can be both stand-alone or connected, and functional
or non-functional; while the space produced can be both habitable or
unhabitable. A sculpture for instance, although is normally considered as unhabitable
and non-functional object, but it is a signifant feature for interior and landscape
design. In some extent, this non-functional object has inspired many outstanding
forms of functional objects, like the ‘Pucuk Rebung’ sculpture for the Menara
Telekom building.
OBJECTIVES
|
§ To improve students’
ability in applying suitable elements and principles of design in producing a
functional structure.
§ To expose the students to
the challenges of designing a small structure that is a result of a connection or
combination of two or more objects.
§ To improve students’ skills
in developing and communicating the ideas through conceptual scale model making.
§ To enhance students’
ability in designing a creative form of object and space with the understanding
of human physiology, ergonomic and comfort factors based on basic technical
knowledge

Project
3b: Objects Connection: A ComforTABLE CHAIR
§ In group
of 3, students are required to produce a structural model of a wooden L-shape seating object that combines
a table and chair(s) (students are free to design and decide the form of each chair/sofa/table/desk)
§ Besides
aesthetical factors, students should also consider the function of the furniture
as an outdoor comfortable resting spot for HBP community and visitors (as it will
be placed near the HBP pond-waterfall).
§ The size
of that L-shape seating object should not be more than 2.8m x 2.0m x 1.2m (length x width x height) dimension.
§ The theme of that seating object is ‘UNITY’, but each group
is free to choose their specific concept that
is relevant to the stipulated theme.
§ The scale of the model is 1:5 and there is no restriction in colours and materials to be used for the
model construction) (new or recycled materials)
§ Each group should include (freehand)
written statement to describe about
their model design (on the suitable empty spaces next to the L-Shape model) and
the title of the project (Objects
Connection), the name of each group members, their majors, and the number
of main group & studiomasters (on the bottom right of the mounting board)
§ The model is to be permanently attached to the A2 size mounting board
as its base.
its a new experience because its not only your idea or your design ..its 3 people mind, thoughts, ideas.. combining in one project.. and here was the difficulty..
this project called
OBJECTS CONNECTION: A ComforTABLE CHAIR
these pictures present our group design about the L-shape chair. The name of our chair design is triple A floral, triple A indicates for the first letter in our name and since the first letter of all my group member is A (Azar, Alaa, Alan) we thought triple A would good name to present our group design, and floral is because the ancient flower design in our chair. We used wooden board for the main material for the pieces and then combined them together with super glue. We have 2 tables for the whole project . The size of our design is 40cm*50cm, the height of the chair is 9cm and for the tables one of them is 14cm height and the other one is 12cm. According to our design concept we put the chair and the tables this way because we wanted the design to be as comfortable and practicable as possible. For the tables we focused about the function and since the location is outdoor the uses of the table may be different. Some would use it for rest and drinks and other could use it for laptop and work. That's why we designed 2 tables in 2 different heights to suite all the uses. We also designed a space underneath the chair so people can put their bags. The design concept is for convenience and saving space.
The main idea of our design is to gather between luxury and the simplicity of the modern life.
that's why we chose ancient flower design to carve the wood to give it more luxuriousness touch but yet we maintained simple and comfortable design.
